Rating System and Review Policy

Rating System:

I rate games on my own, incredibly subjective, 5-point scale.  The focus is how much I liked (or disliked) the game.  While I feel that most games are just OK, there's no scaling to fit some arbitrary distribution.  If I like a game I'll say so and if I don't like it I'll say that too, regardless of how many games are in each category.

I love it:  This is a really awesome game that I love playing and I want to play over and over and over again.  I'll recommend this game to anyone, anytime, anywhere!

I like it:  This is a good game and I enjoy playing.  I might not want to play it all the time, but it's something I'll try to get others to play if I have the chance.  I'll heartily recommend it if people are looking for suggestions.

It's alright:  I think this game is OK.  Other people will probably enjoy it and I would happily  recommend it if I felt it was a good fit for someone else.  I'm always willing to play it if others want to, but might not suggest it on my own.

I don't like it: This is a game I didn't care for.  Something about it was lacking for me, whether it was the elusive "fun" factor, mechanisms I didn't care for, or something else.  I'd only play if someone else really wanted to play, and I probably wouldn't recommend this game unless I knew for sure that it was a good fit for the person I'm recommending it to.

I really don't like it:  This is a game I really didn't care for.  Whatever it was, this game is just not a fit for me.  I'd rather not play it even if someone really wanted to play, but would play if it were someone special asking.  I probably wouldn't recommend this game to anyone.

Reviews

I do accept review copies of games.  If you're interested in having a game reviewed I'd love for you to contact me: you can use the form on the contact page or email me at womenlikeboardgames@gmail.com. While I prefer to review finished/retail products, I may make an exception for a game with a final prototype if it seriously sparks my interest.

  • I will always post my honest opinion of a game
  • I will always follow up with the person who sent me a game to let you know when the review is published and provide links to the review
  • Special note regarding Kickstarter games with an upcoming or ongoing campaign:    Since the game is not available for retail purchase and is subject to change from the version I receive, my goal is not to convince people to back your game, but to let them know how it plays so they can decide for themselves if it's something they would enjoy.  I try not say whether I like the game and will not give it a rating.  I call these Kickstarter Overviews to distinguish them from reviews.  While it's not required, I do appreciate a final production copy of the game if funded.  For me to consider a Kickstarter request, your game must be a final prototype and you must have final rules available.  Due to time constraints on my end, I turn down many more requests for Kickstarter games than I accept.
